Meet the Maker Behind Knit A Rainbow

I'm Kimberly McAlindin, a designer, teacher, and lifelong fiber artist with more than forty years of experience exploring the art of making. My work spans knitting, crochet, spinning and weaving, and I am passionate about helping others discover the confidence and joy that comes from creating with their hands.

Knit A Rainbow was born from the last life lesson my mother gave me before she passed away.

I was sitting with her in the hospital, knitting a grey shawl - Julie's Wrap by Joji Locatelli. She asked who the shawl was for, and I told her it was for me. She closed her eyes, smiled, and said something I will never forget:

"Honey, when life is hard and days are grey... knit a rainbow."

​

Those words stayed with me. I returned the grey yarn and bought the happiest color I could find. That shawl brought me so much comfort during the early days of my grief. Whenever the days felt heavy, I picked up my knitting and those colors helped carry me through.

Knit A Rainbow grew from that simple idea - that creativity, color, and making something with our hands can help us find light even in the darkest of times.

Today I share pattterns, classes, and inspiration through Knit A Rainbow and my YouTube channel, with the hope that every maker who visits here find the same comfort, confidence, and joy that making has always brought to me.
